Sagrado, as it is commonly known, is a private Catholic university in the Santurce district of San Juan, Puerto Rico, with instruction conducted primarily in Spanish. Founded by an order of Catholic sisters in the early twentieth century, it has grown into one of the island's most established private universities, drawing students from across Puerto Rico who want a bilingual, Catholic-affiliated education close to a major urban center.
The university's reputation rests heavily on communications, journalism, marketing, and digital media, fields where graduates are visible across Puerto Rico's broadcast and advertising industries. Business administration and design programs also draw enrollment, and coursework blends a liberal-arts foundation with applied, industry-connected training rather than a purely theoretical curriculum.
The campus is a landmark within Santurce, an arts and cultural district of San Juan, with garden-like grounds that stand out against the surrounding urban blocks. Most students commute from across the San Juan metro area rather than living on campus, and daily life is shaped as much by the neighborhood's galleries and theaters as by organized campus activities.
Classes are conducted mostly in Spanish, which matters for students weighing bilingual versus English-only options in Puerto Rico. The Catholic roots inform campus culture without imposing a strict religious curriculum on non-Catholic students.
