Fayetteville State University is a historically Black public university in North Carolina, founded in 1867 and now part of the UNC System, serving a student body that includes a substantial number of military-affiliated students connected to the neighboring Army post at Fort Bragg (Fort Liberty).
Nursing, criminal justice, business, and education are the school's established professional programs, structured to serve working adults and military-connected students as much as traditional-age undergraduates, including flexible scheduling in several majors.
The campus sits in Fayetteville, a city whose identity is shaped heavily by the nearby military presence, and that shows up directly in student demographics — veterans, active-duty service members, and military family members are a visible and significant part of campus life, not a small side population.
Admission is accessible and mission-driven, with the university explicitly positioning itself around social mobility and affordability for first-generation and military-connected students.
Fayetteville State has one of the stronger records among HBCUs for affordability-adjusted social mobility outcomes, and criminal justice and nursing graduates in particular find steady placement with regional employers and the military-adjacent job market.
The military connection is not incidental — active-duty, veteran, and military-family students make up a real, distinctive share of the student body, and programs are often structured with that population's scheduling needs in mind.
