Northern Michigan University sits in Marquette on the shore of Lake Superior in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, and the surrounding outdoors shapes the university as much as any single academic program does.
Nursing and art and design are consistent strengths, and the university offers one of the country's first undergraduate degrees in medicinal plant chemistry, a distinctive niche program. Class sizes tend toward a personal, small-university feel despite a fairly broad academic catalog.
Students ski, hike, and mountain bike directly from campus, and the university hosts a U.S. Olympic Training Site, giving winter sports a real presence in campus life beyond typical intramurals. Winters are long and genuinely cold, and the surrounding Marquette community is unusually close-knit for a college town.
Admissions is accessible rather than highly selective, and outdoor recreation and winter sports are often as much a draw for applicants as any specific major.
A student should go in expecting real Upper Peninsula winters — this is central to the lifestyle and culture of the place, not an inconvenience to work around, and the outdoor-recreation identity is genuine rather than a marketing angle.
