Overview
The University of Northern Iowa, in Cedar Falls, began as a normal school and has kept teacher education as a defining strength ever since, training a large share of the state's public school teachers. It has grown into a mid-sized, undergraduate-first university with a walkable campus and a strong sense of institutional identity distinct from Iowa's larger public universities.
Academics
Teacher education remains the historic core and a genuine point of statewide influence, and business and accounting programs have grown into solid, well-regarded strengths in their own right, giving UNI a broader professional profile than its normal-school origins might suggest.
Campus & student life
The Cedar Falls campus is compact and walkable, supporting a close, undergraduate-centered social culture, and Panther athletics — wrestling in particular has a strong regional following — play a genuine unifying role on campus, aided by the UNI-Dome's use for both athletics and community events.
Getting in
Admission emphasizes preparation for the university's core strengths, particularly teacher education and business, with a review that is accessible relative to Iowa's other public universities.
After graduation
UNI graduates fill a substantial share of teaching positions across Iowa's public schools, and business and accounting graduates place steadily with Midwest employers and regional accounting firms.
