Georgia Southern is a large public university centered in Statesboro, with additional campuses in Savannah and Hinesville added through a 2018 merger with Armstrong State that broadened its footprint along the Georgia coast. It offers a traditional residential, college-town experience in southeast Georgia, and its identity is built as much around a strong football tradition, the program won multiple national championships at the FCS level before moving up to FBS play, as around its academic programs.
Business, nursing, education, and a newer engineering program are the most popular tracks, with a practical, career-preparation orientation typical of a large regional public university. The Savannah campus, inherited from the Armstrong State merger, adds coastal and health-sciences-adjacent offerings distinct from the main Statesboro programs, giving students in those fields a genuinely different campus environment within the same university. Class sizes are generally moderate, without the research-university scale of Georgia's flagship institutions.
Statesboro is a classic Southern college town built around the university, and football anchors much of the social calendar and campus identity, tailgating culture around the stadium is a fixture of fall semesters, a legacy of the program's championship history at the FCS level. Greek life and a robust student organization scene fill out a campus experience common to large Southern publics, and the Savannah and Hinesville campuses give commuter and transfer students in those regions a more localized alternative to the main Statesboro experience.
Admission emphasizes academic preparation with a fairly standard, less essay-intensive process typical of large Georgia public universities, making it a predictable option for well-prepared in-state students and a reasonably accessible out-of-state option. Applicants to the Savannah or Hinesville campuses apply through the same university but should confirm which specific programs are actually offered at each location.
Graduates tend to stay regional, filling business, education, nursing, and engineering roles across Georgia and the broader Southeast, supported by a sizable and locally engaged alumni base. The Savannah campus in particular feeds coastal Georgia's healthcare and logistics employers, given that port city's economy.
Because of the 2018 Armstrong State merger, Georgia Southern now spans three physically separate campuses with different programs and cultures, worth knowing so a prospective student confirms which campus a given major is actually taught on rather than assuming the Statesboro experience applies everywhere.
