St. Mary's University is a private Catholic university in San Antonio founded by the Society of Mary in 1852, the oldest Catholic university in Texas and the Southwest, with deep roots on the city's west side and a strong Hispanic-Serving mission.
St. Mary's law school is the university's most nationally visible program, producing a large share of South Texas's judges and attorneys, and the undergraduate college is known for strong pre-professional and STEM programs alongside business. The Marianist emphasis on educating the whole person shows up in service-learning built into the curriculum.
The campus sits on San Antonio's west side, historically tied to the city's Mexican-American community, giving St. Mary's a distinct civic identity compared with its more centrally located Catholic peers. Catholic and Marianist traditions are present in campus life without being obligatory for non-Catholic students.
Admissions is holistic, and the university's Hispanic-Serving designation and access mission show up in generous consideration of first-generation applicants and regional Texas students.
San Antonio's legal, military, and healthcare sectors absorb a large share of graduates, and the law school's regional alumni network is especially dense among South Texas judges and practicing attorneys.
The law school's prominence is disproportionate to the university's overall size and shapes St. Mary's identity within San Antonio more than most standalone undergraduate programs would suggest.
