Lourdes University is a Franciscan Catholic university in Sylvania, Ohio, near Toledo, founded by the Sisters of St. Francis and still adjoining their motherhouse. It is best known for nursing and social work, reflecting the Franciscan tradition's emphasis on direct service.
Nursing and social work are the strongest programs, and Franciscan values — service to others and care for creation — run through general education and campus programming rather than being confined to religious studies courses.
The small campus sits next to the founding sisters' motherhouse, giving it a quieter, more contemplative feel than a typical suburban college, set in the Toledo area.
The Franciscan emphasis on service and simplicity is a lived part of campus culture, including service-learning expectations, not just a historical footnote to the school's founding.
