Overview

Pratt Institute is a private art, design, and architecture school in Brooklyn's Clinton Hill neighborhood, one of the most respected creative-arts institutions in the country. Its campus, an unusual green, sculpture-filled enclave amid industrial surroundings, doubles as a public sculpture park and reflects the design sensibility the school cultivates in its students.

Academics

Industrial design, interior design, architecture, and communications design are Pratt's signature strengths, alongside strong programs in fine arts, writing, and library and information science at the graduate level. Studio culture dominates the undergraduate experience, with long working hours, critiques, and a portfolio-driven mentality that begins in the first year. Class sizes in studio courses are small by necessity.

Campus & student life

The campus is compact and walkable, with historic buildings alongside working studios, and its location gives students constant exposure to New York's design, art, and architecture industries. Traditional college social life such as athletics or Greek life is minimal; the culture centers on creative work itself.

Getting in

A portfolio is central to admission for most programs, often weighted as heavily as or more than academic credentials, and the review process is genuinely holistic, evaluating creative potential and fit for a specific discipline rather than a formulaic academic profile.

After graduation

Graduates move heavily into New York's design, architecture, and creative industries, aided by the school's location and its long-standing ties to firms and studios across the city; the alumni network runs deep within specific creative fields rather than broad-based.

Worth knowing

The sculpture park that covers much of campus is a genuine public attraction, not just a backdrop, and studio-based majors expect substantially more in-person working hours than a typical academic course load.
