Harris-Stowe State University is a public historically Black university in midtown St. Louis, grown from two 19th-century teacher-training schools. It serves a largely local, first-generation student body in the heart of the city, with an urban, commuter-influenced campus character.
Education remains a signature mission tracing directly back to the university's founding purpose, alongside business and STEM-access programs designed to open pathways into fields where Black students have historically been underrepresented.
Admission is accessible rather than highly selective, consistent with Harris-Stowe's public mission of serving local St. Louis students, including many first-generation college students.
The university's HBCU identity and urban St. Louis location are central to its mission of serving first-generation and local students, and its teacher-training origins still shape its academic priorities today.
