Morris Brown College is a small private HBCU in Atlanta, founded in 1881 by the African Methodist Episcopal Church as the first Georgia institution of higher learning founded by and for Black Americans. It sits within the Atlanta University Center, alongside Morehouse, Spelman, and Clark Atlanta. The school lost its accreditation in 2002 after a financial scandal and spent two decades operating without it, rebuilding enrollment from a handful of students; it regained accreditation in 2022 and is now in an active rebuilding phase for its programs and student body.
The campus occupies its historic grounds in Atlanta's West End, near the other AUC schools, with buildings that reflect both the college's long history and the strain of its two-decade financial struggle. Enrollment remains small relative to its AUC neighbors as the college works to restore residential life, athletics, and student organizations to their earlier scale.
Morris Brown's story is as much about survival and comeback as about any single program: the accreditation loss and 2022 restoration are the defining facts of the institution today, and prospective students should understand they are joining a school actively rebuilding rather than one operating at its historic scale.
