Mars Hill University is a private university in the small Blue Ridge Mountain town of Mars Hill, North Carolina, north of Asheville. Founded in 1856 with Baptist roots, it is one of the oldest colleges in the region and sits within a landscape closely tied to Appalachian cultural heritage.
Education and nursing are core professional programs, but Mars Hill is distinctively known for its ties to Appalachian music: old-time and bluegrass traditions have deep roots on this campus and in the surrounding area, and the university has long been associated with folk-music scholarship and performance. Class sizes are small across the curriculum.
The mountain setting defines student life outside the classroom, with easy access to hiking and the outdoor culture of western North Carolina, plus proximity to Asheville for a larger arts and music scene. Athletics (the Lions, NCAA Division II) and music ensembles rooted in the region's folk traditions are prominent parts of campus culture.
Mars Hill's process is holistic rather than formula-driven, consistent with a small university that emphasizes individual fit and mentoring over a high-volume applicant pool.
Students drawn to Appalachian folk and bluegrass music traditions, or who want a small campus embedded directly in that cultural landscape, will find a genuine concentration of that heritage here that is uncommon at other colleges.
