SUNY Downstate, in Brooklyn, is New York State's academic medical center for New York City's largest borough — an institution built primarily around medical, dental, and graduate health science education, with undergraduate offerings limited mainly to nursing and related health science fields.
Undergraduate nursing and health science students train within an active hospital and medical school environment, giving them earlier and closer exposure to clinical settings than a standalone undergraduate nursing program would typically offer.
This is a fit for students already committed to a clinical health career who want a hospital-embedded education rather than a traditional four-year undergraduate campus experience; the broader university's identity and resources are overwhelmingly graduate and professional.
