The University of Maryland Eastern Shore is a public historically Black university in Princess Anne, on Maryland's rural Eastern Shore, and one of the nation's 1890 land-grant institutions. Its identity combines that land-grant agricultural mission with a close-knit, residential HBCU community in a quiet rural setting.
Agriculture reflects the university's land-grant roots and includes research and extension work tied to the surrounding Delmarva region. Hospitality and tourism management is another established program, and pre-professional health fields — including a pharmacy program and physical therapy — give the university an unusually strong health-sciences pipeline for its size.
The Princess Anne campus is rural and residential, without a nearby major city, which makes campus life and traditions more central to the student experience than commuting patterns. Athletics compete in NCAA Division I as the Hawks, part of the historically Black college athletic tradition.
The land-grant designation is not just historical trivia — it brings real agricultural research and extension opportunities that a non-land-grant school of similar size would not have. The pharmacy and physical therapy pipelines are a genuine professional strength worth noting for students interested in health careers.
