Penn State Hazleton is a Penn State commonwealth campus in the mountains of northeastern Pennsylvania, serving the Hazleton area with a small, close-knit alternative to the flagship University Park campus.
Students can complete the first two years of most Penn State majors here before transitioning to University Park or another campus to finish the degree, alongside a handful of complete four-year degrees offered on-site. Class sizes are notably smaller than at University Park, giving more direct faculty contact early in a Penn State education.
The campus is small and modest in scale, with limited residential and social offerings compared to University Park, though students carry the full Penn State identity, including access to Penn State resources and, eventually, its alumni network.
Admission standards at commonwealth campuses like Hazleton are generally less competitive than direct admission to University Park, making this a common path for students to enter the Penn State system and later transfer in-house to their intended major and campus.
The 2+2 pathway to University Park is the defining feature — many students choose Hazleton specifically as an easier entry point into the Penn State degree and brand rather than as a four-year destination in itself.
