Harvey Mudd, founded in 1955, is the STEM-only member of the Claremont Colleges consortium: every student majors in math, science, computer science, or engineering, with no way to opt out of a technical major. The distinguishing feature is that this technical focus is paired with an unusually deep humanities and social science requirement, so graduates are trained to write and think broadly, not just compute. At under a thousand students, it is one of the smallest and most specialized colleges in the country.
The workload is legendarily heavy, beginning with a shared first-year 'Core' curriculum in math, science, and engineering that every student takes regardless of eventual major -- a deliberately demanding common experience before specialization. The senior Clinic Program pairs small student teams with real industry and government sponsors on open-ended technical problems, giving graduates a portfolio of applied work before they leave. Deliberate curricular reforms years ago pushed Harvey Mudd's share of women in computer science and engineering to among the highest of any technical college in the country.
Because Harvey Mudd sits within the Claremont Colleges alongside Pomona, Scripps, Claremont McKenna, and Pitzer, students can cross-register and socialize across all five undergraduate campuses, giving a small college's intimacy the range of a much larger university's clubs, parties, and dining halls. On campus, dorms have distinct identities and reputations, and despite the workload, dorm-thrown parties are a well-known release valve. Culture runs nerdy and collaborative rather than cutthroat, reinforced by a trusted honor code.
Admissions looks for students who genuinely want an intensely technical education and can handle the shared Core's difficulty -- this is not a place to land undecided about STEM. Essays and fit with the collaborative honor-code culture matter alongside strong math and science preparation, and demonstrated interest in the Claremont Colleges' cross-registration model can help show a candidate understands what they're signing up for.
Graduates earn some of the highest starting salaries of any U.S. college, heavily recruited into engineering, tech, and finance roles straight out of undergrad. A substantial share also continue into STEM graduate programs, often citing the Clinic Program's real-world project experience as preparation. The alumni network, though small, is unusually well placed in tech and engineering.
The honor code underwrites nearly everything, including unsupervised, self-scheduled exams, even under this workload. The shared first-year Core is a genuine rite of passage every student goes through regardless of eventual major, and access to the other four Claremont campuses substantially expands the small-college experience socially and academically.

The problems that Harvey Mudd College students hope to tackle are shaped by their experiences, values, and communities. Through our intentionally interdisciplinary curriculum and our mission to develop "a clear understanding of the impact of their work," Mudders develop the skills needed to address these complex challenges and contribute meaningfully to society. Share how an experience you've had or community you belong to has shaped the kinds of problems you want to solve and the impact you want to make.
No one succeeds alone, and at Harvey Mudd College, no one expects you to. In and out of the classroom, HMC students are encouraged to embrace challenges, collaborate with one another, and ask for support when they need it. Describe a time when asking for help made a difference in your work or wellbeing. What led you to reach out, and what did you take away from the experience?
