The University of Guam is the U.S. territory's public land-grant university, located in Mangilao on Guam's east coast. It serves both the island and the wider Micronesian region, functioning as the primary pathway into higher education, teaching, nursing, and public-service careers across a broad swath of the western Pacific.
Marine biology and Pacific-island and Micronesian studies benefit directly from the university's setting on a Pacific reef system, giving students field-research opportunities not available at a mainland university. Education, nursing, and public administration are the other core programs, reflecting Guam's need for its own trained workforce in those fields.
The university draws students from across Micronesia, not just Guam itself, giving it a genuinely regional, cross-island student body and identity distinct from a typical U.S. state university.
