Lycoming College is a private liberal arts college in Williamsport, Pennsylvania — best known nationally as home of the Little League World Series — with Methodist roots dating to 1812. It is a small residential college serving a student body drawn mostly from Pennsylvania and the surrounding mid-Atlantic region.
The sciences are a particular strength, with real undergraduate research opportunities that let students work directly alongside faculty rather than only in large lecture settings. Close faculty mentorship is a defining feature across majors, reinforced by small class sizes and ongoing personal contact between students and professors.
Williamsport is a small city, so Lycoming's campus functions as a largely self-contained social community — athletics, campus organizations, and residential life carry more weight in student social life than off-campus city life does. The Little League World Series each August brings national attention to the town, though it happens mostly apart from the academic calendar.
Lycoming's process is holistic rather than formula-driven, with essays and fit weighed alongside grades, consistent with its identity as an accessible small liberal arts option.
The strength of undergraduate research access at this size is a genuine differentiator — students who want lab experience starting early, rather than waiting for a rare slot in a large department, should note it.
