Young Harris College sits in a valley of Georgia's Blue Ridge Mountains, close to the North Carolina line, with a Methodist affiliation. For most of its history it operated as a two-year school before returning to four-year degrees in the 2000s, and it has kept a small, close-knit character through that transition.
The curriculum covers a fairly standard range of liberal-arts and pre-professional majors, with small classes as the defining feature of the classroom experience given the college's size and its relatively recent expansion into four-year degrees.
The mountain-valley setting shapes daily life more than a typical college town would - outdoor recreation, hiking, and the scenery of the Blue Ridge foothills are close at hand, and the small town of Young Harris has little beyond the campus itself.
The college's history as a two-year school within living memory means its four-year identity, upper-division majors, and residential culture are still relatively young compared with colleges that have operated at that level for a century or more.
