Loyola University Maryland is a Jesuit university set in a residential north Baltimore neighborhood, combining a Catholic, liberal-arts-grounded mission with strong pre-professional programs. The campus is organized around a traditional green quad, giving it a more enclosed, classically collegiate feel than many urban universities.
The Sellinger School of Business is the most recognized program, alongside a strong speech-language-hearing sciences department and a required core curriculum rooted in Jesuit liberal-arts tradition; philosophy, theology, and writing-intensive coursework run through every major regardless of concentration. Class sizes tend to be small, with an emphasis on discussion-based teaching.
The north Baltimore setting is residential and relatively quiet compared to downtown Baltimore, with most students living on or near campus. Division I athletics, especially lacrosse, is a genuine point of school pride and campus identity. Jesuit values around service and care for the whole person show up in campus culture, including a strong emphasis on community service.
Admission is holistic, and the application process reflects Jesuit educational values; essays often touch on service, character, and personal growth rather than achievement alone, and demonstrated interest can matter for a mid-sized private university competing for a national applicant pool.
Business and health-sciences graduates place well regionally, particularly in the Baltimore-Washington corridor, aided by a close-knit alumni network with a strong sense of Jesuit-school affinity across the broader network of Jesuit colleges.
