Southeastern Oklahoma State University, in Durant in southeastern Oklahoma, sits within the Choctaw Nation and enrolls a significant share of Native American students. It serves as a regional access point for higher education in a part of the state with few other four-year options.
Education and business are established programs, but Southeastern's most distinctive offering is its professional aviation program, which trains students to become commercial pilots — a genuinely uncommon specialty for a regional public university of this size. The university also runs a large online graduate presence.
The aviation program is worth flagging specifically for students interested in a pilot career path, since flight-training programs at this level are relatively rare, and Southeastern's Choctaw Nation location and Native American enrollment give it a distinct regional character.
