The Pontifical College Josephinum, in Columbus, Ohio, is a Roman Catholic seminary and college of liberal arts with a status held by no other seminary in the Western Hemisphere: it operates under a pontifical charter, placing it under the direct authority of the Holy See rather than a local diocese alone. Its undergraduate college forms men discerning the priesthood through philosophy and the liberal arts, serving as the first stage before graduate theological studies, and it draws seminarians sponsored by dioceses and religious communities from across the country.
The undergraduate curriculum is built around a philosophy major with a strong classical and Thomistic emphasis, paired with the liberal-arts courses expected of any seminary-track student - literature, history, languages, theology - all oriented toward preparing men for graduate theological study. Because every student is a sponsored seminarian, the academic program runs in close coordination with spiritual formation and discernment rather than existing as a separate track alongside ordinary student life.
The campus sits on a large, self-contained property on Columbus's north side, built in a distinctive Gothic and collegiate style, with daily Mass and structured prayer built into the schedule rather than left optional. Because every student is a seminarian sponsored by a diocese or religious order, the community is small, all-male, and organized entirely around formation for priesthood rather than typical undergraduate social life.
