Ursuline College, in Pepper Pike east of Cleveland, was founded by the Ursuline Sisters and was one of the first Catholic colleges for women in the country. Most of its historic identity is built around educating women, while men are admitted into most of its programs today. The campus is small and mission-driven, with Catholic identity present in campus life without being doctrinally restrictive for non-Catholic students.
Nursing is the college's largest and best-known program, drawing on Cleveland's substantial healthcare employer base for clinical placements. Art therapy is a notably distinctive offering, as Ursuline was among the first colleges in the country to establish a dedicated art therapy program, and it remains a signature strength. Education is another long-established program, consistent with the college's historical mission.
The suburban Cleveland setting keeps the small campus quiet, with access to the city's hospitals and cultural institutions a short drive away. Given the college's history and continued emphasis on educating women, campus culture retains a strong sense of that mission even as enrollment has broadened.
Admission is holistic, with nursing applicants facing more selective, capacity-limited review than the general applicant pool, consistent with clinical placement limits typical of undergraduate nursing programs.
The art therapy program's early and continued standing in the field makes Ursuline a meaningfully stronger option than its overall size would suggest for students specifically interested in that career path.
