Salve Regina occupies a stretch of Gilded Age mansions along Newport, Rhode Island's Cliff Walk, giving it one of the most visually distinctive campuses in the country; classes are held inside former Vanderbilt-era estates overlooking the Atlantic. It was founded by the Sisters of Mercy and retains a Catholic identity alongside its academic programs.
Nursing and criminal justice are established strengths, and the university has built out marine-affairs and marine-adjacent offerings that draw on Newport's coastal location and sailing culture.
Newport's maritime setting and sailing traditions shape student life meaningfully, and the mansion campus itself is a constant, tangible presence in day-to-day college life rather than just a backdrop.
The Mercy mission's emphasis on service and compassion shows up in how applications are read, alongside academic preparation.
The historic mansion buildings, while spectacular, mean some academic and residential spaces are older and less conventionally laid out than at a purpose-built modern campus, a tradeoff most students find worth it for the setting.
