The Medical University of South Carolina, in Charleston, is the state's primary academic health center, with a campus dominated by its medical, dental, pharmacy, and graduate health science schools. Undergraduate enrollment is much smaller than the graduate and professional side, concentrated in nursing and other health professions.
Undergraduates train within a full hospital and health-system environment, with clinical exposure and access to faculty who are often also practicing clinicians or researchers at the medical center — an unusual level of proximity to advanced clinical practice for an undergraduate program.
Because the university is first and foremost an academic medical center, undergraduates in nursing and health fields often have a fairly direct pipeline into MUSC's own hospital system or other regional health employers after graduation.
Students should understand that MUSC's identity and resources are built around its graduate and professional health programs; the undergraduate experience is smaller in scale and more narrowly clinical than at a comprehensive university.
