Westminster University in Salt Lake City is a private, nonsectarian liberal arts institution — one of Utah's few notable private options outside the state's dominant religious university system. It combines a small liberal arts core with professional programs and a location that puts major ski resorts and outdoor recreation minutes from campus.
Nursing and business are Westminster's largest and most established programs, and aviation is a further point of distinction, giving the university a mix of liberal arts breadth and clearly career-oriented majors. Outdoor education and recreation-related programs take direct advantage of the Wasatch Range setting, an unusual academic strength tied to geography rather than a generic add-on.
The Salt Lake City location gives students an urban setting with immediate mountain access, and outdoor recreation — skiing above all — is a genuine part of student culture rather than an occasional weekend activity. As a smaller private university in a state dominated by a much larger public and religious institutional landscape, Westminster's identity is partly defined by being the secular, small-college alternative.
Westminster reviews applications holistically and is not among the most selective private institutions nationally, weighing academic record alongside fit with its outdoor-oriented, values-driven but nonsectarian culture. Merit scholarships are a significant part of how the university builds its class given regional tuition competition from Utah's public universities.
Nursing and business graduates place well regionally across the Salt Lake City area's health systems and corporate employers, and outdoor-program graduates often move into recreation, guiding, and environmental education fields tied to the Mountain West.
