Lewis & Clark is a private liberal-arts college in the wooded hills of southwest Portland, Oregon, occupying a former estate with views toward Mount Hood. It has a long-standing progressive, outdoors-oriented culture.
International affairs, environmental studies, and psychology are the college's clearest strengths, and study abroad is a defining feature of the academic experience; a large share of students spend a semester or year overseas, supported by the college's own long-running overseas programs rather than third-party providers.
The campus's wooded, hillside setting reinforces an outdoorsy, environmentally minded student culture, and Portland's broader progressive character extends naturally into campus life.
Applications are read holistically, with genuine attention to essays and fit; Lewis & Clark has historically emphasized access alongside academic strength.
The college's own overseas study programs, rather than a patchwork of outside providers, mean study abroad here is unusually well-integrated into the curriculum rather than a separate add-on.
