The University of Maryland, Baltimore is the University System of Maryland's professional-schools campus in downtown Baltimore, home to the schools of medicine, law, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing, and social work. It functions primarily as a graduate and professional institution embedded in a working academic medical center, with a comparatively small undergraduate presence.
Undergraduate enrollment is concentrated mostly in nursing and other health-related completion programs, often for students finishing a degree after starting elsewhere, rather than a full four-year liberal arts undergraduate experience. Students admitted to these programs benefit from direct proximity to UMB's major teaching hospital and professional schools.
Prospective students should understand UMB is not a traditional undergraduate campus in the conventional sense — there is no large first-year class, dorm-centered social life, or broad liberal arts core; it exists primarily to train medical, dental, law, pharmacy, nursing, and social work professionals, with undergraduates entering mainly through specific health-completion pathways.
