Andrews University in Berrien Springs, Michigan is the flagship university of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, and that affiliation shapes nearly everything about the place, from the academic calendar to the makeup of the student body, which draws heavily from Adventist communities worldwide and is unusually international for a school its size.
The Adventist emphasis on health translates into real strength in nursing, dietetics, and pre-medicine, feeding graduates into the church's extensive network of Adventist hospitals and health systems. Andrews also houses a seminary that trains pastors and religious educators, and its education programs carry the same denominational pipeline into Adventist K-12 schools.
Campus life follows Adventist practice, most visibly in Saturday Sabbath observance, which shapes the weekly rhythm — Friday evenings and Saturdays are set aside for worship and rest rather than classes or usual campus programming. The international student population gives the campus a notably global character, with students arriving from Adventist communities across Africa, Latin America, and Asia alongside domestic students.
Andrews expects applicants to be comfortable with, or at least accepting of, the religious framework shaping campus life, and a letter or background speaking to an applicant's faith can matter in the admissions conversation even though the university enrolls non-Adventist students as well.
Graduates in health fields have a clear pipeline into Adventist Health and other denominational hospital systems, and seminary and education graduates often move into Adventist churches and schools, giving Andrews an alumni network that functions partly through the church itself.
Applicants unfamiliar with Adventism should know Sabbath observance, from sundown Friday to sundown Saturday, genuinely affects the weekly schedule, including when dining halls operate and when events are scheduled — it is not a nominal affiliation.
