Miles College is a historically Black college near Birmingham, Alabama, affiliated with the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church. It holds a real place in Birmingham's civil-rights history, with Miles students among those who took part in the movement's organizing in the 1960s.
Teacher education has long been a core strength, reflecting the college's founding mission, alongside business and other liberal-arts programs typical of small HBCUs.
The marching band is a genuine point of campus pride and visibility, in the tradition common to HBCU band culture. The college's Birmingham-area location connects it to the city's broader civil-rights heritage and Black community institutions.
As with many HBCUs, Miles weighs context and potential alongside academic record, with a mission oriented toward access for first-generation and underserved students.
Miles's direct historical role in the civil-rights movement is a genuine institutional identity, not incidental trivia — the college's own students were part of Birmingham's organizing, and that history is visibly present in campus culture today.
