Dominican University New York, in Orangeburg, in Rockland County just over the New Jersey line, was founded by Dominican sisters and retains a Catholic identity while serving a largely commuter, first-generation student population from the lower Hudson Valley and northern New Jersey.
Health professions are the clear strength — occupational therapy, physical therapy, nursing, and athletic training all have real reputations, feeding graduates into regional hospital and clinical systems. Teacher education is the other significant program area. Programs tend toward licensure-track, professional preparation rather than broad liberal arts exploration.
As a largely commuter institution, the on-campus residential culture is smaller than at a typical four-year college, and many students continue living at home or nearby while attending, balancing coursework with jobs or family responsibilities. Its location gives easy access to both the lower Hudson Valley and northern New Jersey without being inside New York City itself.
The commuter character shapes daily life more than dormitory life does — this suits students who want to stay close to home and family in Rockland County or nearby New Jersey while training for a licensed health or teaching career.
