Overview
The University of Illinois Springfield is the smallest campus in the University of Illinois system and the only one located in the state capital rather than a traditional college town. That location shapes its identity: proximity to state government gives it a signature strength in public affairs, policy, and administration that the system's larger, more research-focused campuses don't replicate in the same way.
Academics
Legislative and government internships are the defining academic opportunity here, with students in public affairs, political science, and related majors working directly inside the Illinois state capitol and executive agencies during the school year rather than only in summer. Classes stay small across the university, which also runs an extensive slate of online degree programs serving a working-adult population well beyond its residential enrollment.
Campus & student life
As a smaller, less residential-feeling campus in a mid-size capital city, UIS lacks the sprawling social scene of its sister UI campuses; student life centers more on specific programs and organizations than a dominant campus-wide culture.
Getting in
Admission is less selective and more accessible than the flagship Urbana-Champaign campus, with UIS often serving as an alternative within the UI system for students who want the state university brand along with smaller classes and an easier bar to entry.
After graduation
Public affairs and policy graduates have a well-worn path into Illinois state government and related public-sector employers, aided directly by the internship pipeline.
