The University of Saint Joseph is a Catholic university in West Hartford, Connecticut, founded by the Sisters of Mercy and now fully coeducational after decades as a women's college. Its campus is parklike and suburban, and the university has retained a strong health-sciences identity even as it broadened access to men and expanded programs.
Nursing and the health sciences, including occupational and physical therapy pathways, are the university's clearest strengths, supported by clinical partnerships across the Hartford area's hospital systems. Education is another long-standing program, and class sizes throughout stay small, consistent with the university's roots as a personal, mentorship-oriented women's college.
The West Hartford campus is quiet and green, closer to a traditional small-college feel than an urban one, while still giving students access to greater Hartford's opportunities. Given the health-sciences concentration, much of student life outside class centers on clinical placements and cohort-based programs rather than large-scale campus traditions.
Saint Joseph reviews applications holistically, with particular attention to preparation for its competitive nursing and health-science programs, which often carry separate application steps or GPA benchmarks beyond general admission. Mission fit with the Mercy tradition of service is referenced in the application, though the university does not require Catholic affiliation from applicants.
Graduates in nursing and health sciences have strong local placement into Hartford-area hospitals and clinics, reflecting clinical partnerships built over decades as a health-professions pipeline. The Sisters of Mercy heritage also shows up in graduates who move into education and service-oriented nonprofit work regionally.
