Belmont Abbey College is a Catholic liberal arts college near Charlotte, North Carolina, founded by Benedictine monks whose working abbey still sits at the center of campus. Monks continue to teach, worship, and live alongside students, giving the college a genuinely monastic character uncommon among American colleges.
The curriculum leans into a Great Books-flavored core, with required coursework in philosophy, theology, and the classics that gives every graduate a shared foundation regardless of major. Business is a notably strong practical program alongside the traditional liberal arts, and the college has built a reputation for a traditionalist, intellectually serious approach to Catholic higher education.
Daily and weekly prayer with the monastic community is a real, visible part of campus rhythm, not just a backdrop, and the close-knit residential culture reflects the Benedictine motto of prayer and work. The campus sits a short drive from Charlotte, giving students city access without an urban campus footprint.
The living Benedictine community is what most sets Belmont Abbey apart — monks are professors, chaplains, and daily presences on campus, not a historical footnote. The college has also cultivated a reputation as one of the more traditionally and doctrinally conservative Catholic colleges in the country.
