Texas Southern University is a public historically Black university in Houston's Third Ward, one of the largest HBCUs in the country, with deep roots in the city's civil-rights history and a mission built around access and opportunity for Black and other underserved students.
The Thurgood Marshall School of Law and strong pharmacy and health-sciences programs are the university's most recognized offerings, alongside an aviation science program that is distinctive among HBCUs. Programs generally lean professional and pre-professional, with direct ties to Houston's job market.
The campus sits in Houston's Third Ward, close to the Museum District and Texas Medical Center. The Ocean of Soul marching band is a major point of pride and a fixture at football games and citywide events, drawing attention well beyond the student body itself.
Admissions functions as a genuine access point for first-generation and Houston-area Black students, with more emphasis on identifying students who will thrive with the university's support structures than on raw selectivity.
The law school and pharmacy program feed graduates into Texas courts, government, and healthcare systems, and the university has a long track record of producing Black professionals in law, education, and health fields regionally and nationally.
The Third Ward location ties the university closely to Houston's civil-rights history and Black community institutions, and many students build as much of their college experience around that connection as around coursework.
