Duke is a private research university in Durham, North Carolina, where gothic quads and the adjoining Duke Forest sit beside one of the country's leading academic medical centers. It sits at the edge of Research Triangle Park, giving it a research and biotech ecosystem most campuses its size don't have nearby. Duke combines the scale and resources of a major research university with a campus culture that stays tightly knit, anchored by West Campus's Gothic architecture and Duke Chapel, and by the Blue Devils' famously loud following.
Premed and biomedical engineering are Duke's signature strengths, feeding directly into Duke University Hospital and a deep research infrastructure, while the Sanford School of Public Policy, economics, and the Pratt School of Engineering are similarly well regarded. Undergraduates split between Trinity College of Arts and Sciences and Pratt, and can pursue research early through programs like Bass Connections, which puts students on faculty-led interdisciplinary teams, or DukeEngage, a funded summer service program. Curious students can also design their own major through Program II rather than picking from a standard list.
First-years live together on East Campus, a quieter, more residential quad, before moving to West Campus's Gothic architecture and its cluster of selective living groups and Greek houses. Duke basketball is central to campus identity — students camp for weeks in tent city, known as Krzyzewskiville, to earn a seat for games against rival North Carolina, and the Cameron Crazies remain the most recognized student section in college sports. Sarah P. Duke Chapel and the adjoining gardens give campus a formal, monumental center, while Durham's food, music, and startup scene has grown up around the university's edges.
Duke's process is holistic and looks for students who have pursued real depth in and out of the classroom, not just a strong transcript — essays and demonstrated engagement with a specific interest matter. The school runs an active early decision round that fills a meaningful share of each class, and alumni interviews, where available, help fill out the picture of an applicant beyond paper.
Graduates move heavily into medicine, consulting, finance, and law, aided by a well-organized career center and an alumni network that is especially strong in the Southeast and in healthcare fields nationally. Duke's ties to its own hospital system give premed graduates an unusually direct research and clinical pipeline before medical school.
Duke's undergraduate schools — Trinity College of Arts and Sciences and the Pratt School of Engineering — share a campus and many resources but have distinct requirements. Krzyzewskiville tenting for basketball tickets is a real, months-long ritual, not just a tradition in name, and Bass Connections and DukeEngage give students structured ways into research and service work well before senior year.

Duke's Early Decision is binding, so an admitted student enrolls at Duke and withdraws applications from every other school.
Interviews: Duke offers an optional recorded video interview through Glimpse; it isn't required, and Early Decision applicants have less time to complete it than Regular Decision applicants do.
