Columbia is an Ivy League research university on Manhattan's Upper West Side, distinguished by the Core Curriculum — a shared sequence including Literature Humanities, Contemporary Civilization, Art Humanities, and Music Humanities — that every Columbia College undergraduate takes regardless of major (engineering students in the School of Engineering and Applied Science follow a lighter version). The university treats New York City itself as an extension of campus, and that access shapes academics, internships, and student life alike. Columbia's affiliation with Barnard College across the street adds cross-registration, shared housing options, and a larger combined social and academic community.
The Core is the defining academic feature, giving all Columbia College students a common intellectual grounding in foundational texts, art, and music before they specialize, taught in small, discussion-based sections rather than lectures. Beyond the Core, strengths run deep in the humanities, journalism (the university's Graduate School of Journalism administers the Pulitzer Prizes), international affairs, and the sciences, and a range of dual- and combined-degree options — including a well-known partnership with Juilliard and several engineering arrangements with smaller liberal-arts colleges — let students combine Columbia with another institution formally.
Campus is a compact, gated quad within a much larger city, centered on the steps of Low Library, so student life blends a traditional collegiate core with constant access to Manhattan's culture, internships, and nightlife just beyond the gates. Housing is guaranteed for all four years, with dorms like John Jay and Carman anchoring first-year life on the Morningside Heights campus. Athletics compete in the Ivy League without dominating social life the way football does at some peers, and the contrast between the enclosed, tree-lined campus and the surrounding city is part of the school's identity.
Columbia's process is holistic and highly selective, and given the Core's centrality, essays that show genuine intellectual engagement — comfort with big ideas, close reading, and discussion — tend to resonate with an admissions committee assembling a class that will spend two full years in shared seminars together. The university also weighs an applicant's evident interest in using New York City itself as part of their education, since so much of the Columbia experience depends on that access.
Graduates move heavily into media, journalism, finance, law, and international affairs, aided by the density of major employers, publishers, and institutions in New York City itself. The alumni network is especially strong in publishing, journalism, and Wall Street, and the university's location gives students unusually direct access to internships and recruiting throughout their four years, not just at graduation.
The Core Curriculum is a real, shared commitment — nearly every Columbia College student takes the same handful of courses across their first two years — which is unusual among peer research universities and worth understanding before applying. The close relationship with Barnard effectively doubles the social and residential community without doubling the size of Columbia itself.
RecommendedFive academic courses per term for all four years of secondary school (typical of successful applicants) · Preparation in humanities, mathematics, social sciences, foreign languages, and natural sciences · Mathematics through pre-calculus strongly advised for prospective scientists, engineers, physicians, dentists · Columbia Engineering applicants: four years of mathematics through calculus · Columbia Engineering applicants: four years of laboratory science including one year of chemistry and one year of physics, preferably in the last two years of secondary school
