Lane College is a small, historically Black college in Jackson, Tennessee, founded in 1882 by the Colored Methodist Episcopal Church — now the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church — with which it remains affiliated. It offers a close-knit HBCU community experience, smaller than many of its peer institutions, with a curriculum centered on the liberal arts and sciences.
Criminal justice, biology, and business are among Lane's more established programs, taught in small classes where faculty know students by name. The CME church affiliation shows up in campus religious life and values more than in specific required coursework.
The Jackson, Tennessee campus carries strong HBCU traditions — homecoming, Greek life through the Divine Nine, and marching band culture are central to student life. Athletics compete in NCAA Division II within the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
Lane's alumni network is tightly tied to CME church leadership and to public service and education careers across Tennessee and the broader South, consistent with its historical mission of training Black leaders in the postbellum South.
