Emory & Henry University is a private Methodist-affiliated institution based in the mountains of far southwest Virginia, historically among the more remote parts of the state. Its main liberal-arts campus is complemented by a separate campus in Marion built around growing health-sciences programs, giving the university two distinct locations with different academic character.
The traditional liberal arts core remains centered on the historic campus, while the Marion location has become the hub for expanding health-sciences degrees, reflecting the university's strategic push into that field. The Appalachian setting shapes coursework and outreach with a genuine regional service and outdoor-education emphasis.
The far-southwest Virginia mountain setting is remote relative to Virginia's population centers, and outdoor programs tied to the surrounding Appalachian landscape are a meaningful part of student life, alongside the university's service mission toward the surrounding rural region.
The two-campus structure, a traditional liberal-arts main campus and a separate, newer health-sciences campus in Marion, is unusual and worth understanding before enrolling, since program location may affect a student's day-to-day setting.
