The University of Montana-Western, in Dillon, is the only public university in the country built entirely around "Experience One," a block schedule where students take one class at a time, immersively, for a few weeks before moving to the next, rather than juggling four or five courses across a semester.
Education is a longstanding strength, and the university has built a genuinely distinctive natural horsemanship program, unique among American universities, that draws students specifically for that specialty. The block schedule suits field-based and hands-on learning particularly well, letting a class spend concentrated stretches of time outdoors or in a lab without competing against other coursework for a student's attention that week.
Dillon is a small town in ranch country near the Beaverhead Mountains, and the setting shapes campus life directly — outdoor recreation, ranching culture, and a slower-paced small-town environment are all part of daily life here, a sharp contrast to a large research university.
Applicants should understand the block schedule is a real structural commitment, not a gimmick — it changes how coursework is paced and how much can be accomplished in a given stretch, and students who prefer studying multiple subjects at once should think carefully about whether the model fits how they work.
The natural horsemanship program is a genuine rarity nationally and is worth knowing about specifically for students with that interest — it is not offered in comparable form at other American universities.
