Loma Linda University is a Seventh-day Adventist health-sciences university in Southern California's Inland Empire, built around its own academic medical center. It functions overwhelmingly as a graduate and professional institution — medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing, and public health — with a comparatively small undergraduate population concentrated in nursing and allied health.
Undergraduate programs are almost entirely pre-professional or allied-health in orientation — nursing, respiratory therapy, radiologic technology, and similar fields — designed with a clear eye toward LLU's own graduate and professional schools or other health careers. Class work is closely tied to the adjoining medical center, giving undergraduates clinical exposure most small health programs cannot offer.
Sabbath observance, running from Friday sundown to Saturday sundown, genuinely shapes the weekly rhythm of campus life, with quieter weekends and a strong emphasis on Adventist health philosophy — vegetarian dining, wellness programming, and a campus culture built around the faith's holistic-health tradition. The surrounding city of Loma Linda is itself well known as a longevity Blue Zone, a reputation tied directly to the local Adventist community's lifestyle.
Undergraduate admission functions largely as an entry point into LLU's health pipeline, with applicants expected to show genuine interest in health careers and comfort with the university's faith-based campus culture, even though Adventist affiliation itself is not required.
The pipeline from LLU's own undergraduate allied-health programs into its graduate and professional schools is strong and well-worn, and alumni are heavily represented across the Adventist Health hospital network nationally and internationally.
Sabbath observance is not a background detail but a real, weekly feature of campus life that prospective students should understand before enrolling.
