UCLA is a large public research university in Los Angeles's Westwood neighborhood, strong across nearly every field, from film and television to engineering and the life sciences. The campus sits minutes from both the Pacific and Hollywood, and Bruin athletics carry one of the most storied championship traditions in college sports, particularly in basketball. As one of the University of California's flagship campuses, UCLA offers the depth of a major research university inside a genuinely urban setting.
Film and television, engineering, and the life sciences are all particularly strong, and a busy pre-med pipeline is tied directly to UCLA's academic medical center and teaching hospital. As a large public research university, UCLA offers depth across an unusually wide range of majors and a large graduate research enterprise that undergraduates can plug into, though class sizes in popular introductory courses can run large before narrowing in upper-division seminars.
Westwood's urban-adjacent setting gives students easy access to Los Angeles while the campus itself retains a traditional, tree-lined quad feel centered on Royce Hall and the historic core of campus. Bruin sports, especially basketball's storied history under a run of legendary championships, are a major part of campus identity, and the sheer size of the student body supports an enormous range of clubs, cultural organizations, and subcultures that a smaller school couldn't sustain.
UCLA's process is holistic within the University of California's own application framework, and given its selectivity and size, strong academics alone are not usually enough — the personal insight essays carry real weight in distinguishing among a very large applicant pool. Because it's part of the UC system, applicants submit one application covering multiple UC campuses in the same cycle.
Graduates move heavily into entertainment and media, technology, medicine, and law, helped by UCLA's Los Angeles location and a large, active alumni network across the entertainment industry in particular. The sheer size of the graduating class each year means the alumni network is broad rather than especially tight-knit.
UCLA's proximity to Hollywood makes its film and media programs unusually well connected to the industry, with real internship and entry-level pipelines that smaller programs elsewhere can't match. Its size means students should expect a bigger, more self-directed experience than at a small private college, where navigating bureaucracy is itself a skill worth developing early.
