New College of Florida, on a bayfront campus in Sarasota, is Florida's designated public honors college, historically known for an unconventional academic model built around independent study and close faculty mentorship rather than a conventional lecture-and-grade structure.
The traditional New College model replaces letter grades with narrative evaluations, requires student-designed study contracts negotiated with faculty each term, and culminates in a required senior thesis - a structure that demands strong self-direction and rewards students who want to shape much of their own course of study.
The Sarasota bayfront setting is central to student life, with sailing and other water-based activities available directly from campus; the historically small, intellectually intense student body has cultivated a distinct, independent-minded campus culture.
Because the academic model demands self-direction, admissions has traditionally looked for students who want to design their own path of study, not just strong grades and test scores in the abstract.
In recent years, a high-profile, politically driven overhaul of New College's board and leadership has changed aspects of the college's direction and culture; students and families should look into how much of the traditional narrative-evaluation, contract-based model remains intact at the time they are applying, since this is an institution in real flux rather than a fixed, long-settled program.
