Western New Mexico University is a public, Hispanic-serving university in Silver City, in the state's mountainous southwest near the Gila Wilderness, serving a largely regional and first-generation student population.
Nursing, education, and applied sciences programs make up the core of Western New Mexico's offerings, designed to be accessible and directly career-connected for a student body drawn heavily from the surrounding rural region.
Admission is open and accessible, consistent with the university's mission of serving first-generation and regional students who might not otherwise have a nearby four-year option.
The Silver City setting, at the edge of the Gila Wilderness, gives the campus a genuinely remote, mountain-and-desert character distinct from New Mexico's larger urban campuses, and the university's Hispanic-serving designation reflects sustained commitment to serving the region's Hispanic student population.
