Saint Joseph's is a Jesuit university on the leafy edge of Philadelphia, its campus straddling the city line along City Avenue. It is known for business, especially food marketing, insurance and risk management, and accounting, along with an expanded health-professions offering built through recent mergers with Philadelphia-area health-sciences schools. Hawk basketball and the "The Hawk Will Never Die" tradition are central to its identity.
The Haub School of Business is the university's clearest strength, and its food marketing program in particular is a long-standing national specialty, drawing on Philadelphia's concentration of consumer-packaged-goods companies. Insurance and risk management and accounting are similarly well regarded niche business tracks. Recent mergers with other area health-sciences institutions have significantly broadened the university's offerings in pharmacy and other health professions.
The City Avenue campus sits directly on the boundary between Philadelphia proper and its Main Line suburbs, giving students city access without a fully urban campus feel. Basketball carries real weight in student culture; the live costumed hawk that flaps continuously throughout home games is a genuine, decades-old tradition rather than a marketing invention.
As a Jesuit institution, Saint Joseph's holistic review pays attention to fit with its mission and community, alongside academic preparation, and business applicants in particular are evaluated with an eye toward the specific track, such as food marketing or risk management, they intend to pursue.
Food marketing and business graduates place well into Philadelphia-area and national consumer-products and insurance employers, industries where the university has built specific, long-running recruiting relationships.
The food marketing and insurance/risk management programs are genuine, decades-old specialties rather than recently branded majors, and the recent health-sciences mergers mark a real expansion of what had historically been a business-and-liberal-arts university.
