The University of Maine at Presque Isle is a small public campus in Maine's far-northern Aroostook County, in potato-farming country near the Canadian border, built around access and affordability for the region.
Education and nursing pathways are the most established programs, and outdoor-oriented offerings take advantage of the campus's rural, sparsely populated surroundings.
As an access-focused regional public campus, admissions is not highly selective and is oriented toward serving Aroostook County and other rural Maine students who might not otherwise attend college away from home.
The remoteness of the location, genuinely far from any city, in an agricultural region unlike the rest of Maine's more populated coastal areas, is central to understanding who the campus serves and why it exists where it does.
