Midway University sits in the horse country of central Kentucky, between Lexington and Frankfort, and was founded to educate orphaned girls. It remained Kentucky's only women's college for well over a century before going fully coeducational, a history still reflected in its identity today.
Equine studies is a natural and well-regarded signature program given the surrounding horse farms and the university's place inside one of Kentucky's core Thoroughbred regions, drawing students who want hands-on training and internships in a working equine economy. Nursing and business have grown into the university's other major programs.
The equine studies program benefits directly from Midway's location inside one of the most concentrated horse-farming regions in the country, giving students access to internships and industry connections that a program elsewhere couldn't offer. The women's college history is a point of institutional pride even after the shift to coeducation.
