Plymouth State University, in New Hampshire's White Mountains region, is a public university whose identity is deeply tied to its mountain setting — meteorology, outdoor and adventure education, and environmental science are all built around direct access to the surrounding terrain and weather systems.
The university reorganized much of its undergraduate curriculum around interdisciplinary "clusters" that emphasize hands-on, project-based learning across traditional department lines, a notably different structural choice than most public universities its size. Meteorology in particular has a strong regional reputation, and education remains a longstanding core program.
Skiing, hiking, and other mountain recreation are not just extracurricular options but part of the texture of daily life in the surrounding Lakes Region and White Mountains, and outdoor-oriented programs draw students specifically for that access.
The "cluster" curriculum model is a real structural departure from a conventional major and general-education system, and prospective students should understand it before assuming Plymouth State works like a typical state university academically.
