Georgian Court University is a Catholic university in Lakewood, New Jersey, founded by the Sisters of Mercy on the former estate of financier George Jay Gould. The estate's formal gardens and mansion are a National Historic Landmark and remain part of daily campus life rather than being roped off as a museum piece.
Nursing, education, and psychology are Georgian Court's most established programs, and the university serves a substantial population of first-generation students from central New Jersey, with support structures built around that population's needs.
The historic estate setting is genuinely distinctive — students attend class and walk to meals across grounds built as a Gilded Age estate, giving the campus a physical character unlike a typical modern college. Mercy values of service and hospitality are woven into campus culture, visible in service programs and a generally welcoming, community-oriented tone.
Georgian Court's process pays particular attention to first-generation and regional applicants, and the university is known for working closely with students who may need more guidance navigating the college-application and financial-aid process than a typical applicant.
The Gould estate grounds are a real physical asset worth knowing about — the mansion and gardens are landmarked and actively used, not a historical footnote, and they shape what the campus actually looks and feels like day to day.
