Maine Maritime Academy is a small public college in the coastal village of Castine, Maine, built entirely around maritime careers. Programs in marine engineering, vessel operations, marine transportation, and ocean studies combine classroom work with hands-on training aboard an actual training ship.
Students in license-track majors complete sea time aboard the academy's training vessel, including an annual multi-week training cruise, a requirement that sets Maine Maritime apart from ordinary engineering or logistics programs. The curriculum is applied and technical, built to meet U.S. Coast Guard licensing requirements alongside the academic degree.
Castine is a small coastal village, and the academy's culture borrows structure and discipline from maritime tradition — uniforms and a regimented daily schedule are part of campus life for students in license-track programs, though the school is not a military academy and carries no service obligation.
Graduates are known for landing directly into maritime-industry jobs in shipping, engineering, and marine operations, with a placement reputation among the strongest of any small college in the country, aided by the licensing credential built into the degree.
No military commitment is required despite the uniformed, regimented campus culture, which surprises some applicants — students should expect the structure of a service academy without the service obligation.
