Inter American University of Puerto Rico-San Germán is the founding campus of the Inter American University system, located in the historic southwestern town of San Germán. It has a residential, traditional-campus character unusual among the island's private universities, many of which lean commuter, and traces its Christian ecumenical identity back to 1912, making it one of the older private institutions of higher education in Puerto Rico.
The campus offers programs across business, education, sciences, and the arts, reflecting the broader Inter American system's comprehensive scope rather than a narrow specialization. Instruction follows a conventional undergraduate model, with the residential setting allowing closer contact between students and faculty than is typical at the system's more commuter-oriented campuses.
San Germán is a small, historic town, one of Puerto Rico's oldest, and the residential character of the campus sets it apart from more commuter-oriented sister campuses elsewhere in the Inter American system. Student life is organized around a close campus community rather than a large city environment.
The ecumenical Christian heritage shapes some campus traditions and community expectations, though the university serves a broad, not narrowly denominational, student population. Its status as the system's founding campus gives it a somewhat more traditional, established feel than newer Inter American locations.
